Using British Literature to Teach Empathy to the Chinese University Students Majoring in English Language

This paper aimed to strengthen Chinese University English Majors’ (CUEMs) capability in understanding, analyzing, and appreciating British Literature. research focuses on the effective pedagogy applied make CUEMs compassionate empathetic. The participants were 65 students who are their third year of study at School Foreign Languages, Sichuan Science & Engineering, a University, therefore they can sympathize with feelings emotions expressed by authors, showing mastery literary writings. Facing exotic literature, usually feel perplexed stressed, then give cold shoulder course as well teaching staff. empathy empowerment program adopted qualitative design, acquiring textual data gained from learners asked hand essays particularly assigned researcher perceive whether become empathetic after learning some After collected coded analyzed, testified that taking literature classes through thematic analysis. be valuable for academics both outside China frequently confused, helpless, even frustrated eager get more responses class assign meaningful thought-provoking, empathy-arousing essay questions highly associated texts scrutinizing essays, an active communication between academic successfully made.
